Varsity Cross Country and Varsity and Jr. High Track & Field Head Coach
Joining our program in the Fall of 2019, Amy Laffan grew up in Georgia where she participated in cross country and basketball at Calvary Christian School in Columbus, Georgia. She earned a Political Science degree from the University of Texas at El Paso. Today, she continues to be an avid runner, usually running between 50-60 miles a week, in her words, “for fun”. Coach Laffan has lived in El Paso for 18 years after moving with her husband, Jason, who works full time with Casas por Cristo, an organization that does mission work through building houses and planting churches. Amy Laffan is the loving mother of three boys, Jonas, Kash, and Titus. Her family is now proud to call El Paso home.

Varsity Tennis Head Coach, Jr High Tennis Head Coach, and 6th Grade Teacher
Having over 13 years of experience at Immanuel, Gilbert J. Valerio was born and raised in El Paso and graduated from Bel Air High School. He went on to attain a BAAS Degree in Business Management from Howard Payne University and a Masters in Elementary Education from Grand Canyon University. Not only is Coach Valerio a tennis coach he serves as one of Immanuel’s 6th-grade teachers. Coach Valerio and his wife have two kids of their own that have graduated from Immanuel within the last few years. Coach Valerio commits so much of his time and energy to the tennis teams where he has developed a winning program. His programs have been the fastest growing over the years. Because of his dedication to the kids and the program, his teams have brought home four team state championships in the last six years, three-team state runner-up honors, several team district championships, and many individual district/state championships. His drive to bring a team together to become “FAMILY” has stuck for good. Awwwww…Warriors on three…one! two! three! WARRIORS!

Varsity Girls Basketball Asst. Coach; Jr. High Blue Team Girls Basketball Asst. Coach; Jr. High and Varsity Track & Field Asst. Coach
Joining our program in the Winter of 2016, Iliana Medina has grown up in El Paso where she attended Immanuel Christian School. She was a member of the 2013 Varsity Girls Basketball TCAF State Championship Team. She graduated from ICS in the Summer of 2016. She currently attends the University of Texas at El Paso, where she will earn a degree in Accounting in the Summer of 2020. As a coach, she has assisted in Jr. High and Varsity Girls Basketball and Elementary, Jr. High, and Varsity Track, while being the Head Coach of 3rd Grade Co-Ed Basketball. She has contributed to the success of many of these teams:

She has two siblings, Vianey (Class of 2015) and Zach (Class of 2020) have also attended ICS. She is a member of her family church, Cornerstone Church. Coach Medina enjoys running and usually spends her summers doing mission work with Global Ventures.

Aaron M. Huerta
Varsity Boys Basketball Head Coach and Junior Varsity Boys

Joining our program in 2017, Aaron M. Huerta has grown up in El Paso where he attended Immanuel Christian School. While at ICS he played Varsity Basketball under the legendary Coach Dave Frazier and was an integral member and starter of the 2007 and 2008 TCAF State Championship teams. During that time he was named to All-District, All-City, and All-State teams in 2008. He graduated from ICS in the Summer of 2008. Huerta went on to attend the University of Texas at El Paso where he attained a BBA in Marketing and Finance. As a coach, he has assisted in Varsity Boys Basketball from the Winter of 2017 to the Spring of 2019, and the Head Coach of Jr. Varsity Boys Basketball since the Winter of 2018. In the Winter of 2019, Huerta took the Head Coach position for Varsity Boys Basketball. As a first-year head coach, he led our Varsity Boys Basketball Team to their first 20 win season since the 2013-14 season. Furthermore, the coaches voted Huerta the 2019-20 Coach of the Year for TCAF Division 1 District 2.

Jr. High Girls Volleyball Head Coach
Joining our program in 2017, Alexa Venturella was born in Houston and raised in El Paso for 14 years, where she was Homeschooled. She played Varsity Volleyball with El Paso Christian Homeschool for all 4 years of high school, where she helped lead her team to a TCAL State Title in 2014 and a TAIO State Title in 2015. She is currently attending El Paso Community College. As a coach, she has been the Head Coach of Elementary Girls, 6th Grade Girls, and Jr. High Girls Volleyball. For the past 10 years, she has had a strong passion for volleyball which led her to a long playing career, beginning when she was 10 years old, and a desire to begin coaching at 16 years old. She has recently become a certified volleyball official. She is one of five children to Sam and Heather Venturella. Her two brothers Sal and Hunter both played Varsity Basketball for Immanuel. Alexa’s goal, in her own words, is to “build strong, consistent players and instill a passion for volleyball.”

Jr. High Blue Team Boys Basketball Head Coach
Joining our program in 2018, Daniel Rico has grown up in El Paso where he attended Immanuel Christian School. While at ICS he played Varsity Basketball from 2012-2014. He graduated from ICS in the Summer of 2014. Rico went on to attend Bible College at Crossroads Leadership College from 2016-2018. As a coach, he took the top job in Jr. High Football for the 2018 season. Additionally, he was named the head coach of the Jr. High Boy’s Blue Team in 2018. In the 2019-20 season, he led the Jr. High Boy’s Blue Team to an undefeated 20-0 season, and a SWCAA Championship. Rico is one of three children to Rosie and JC Rico, who is the Head Pastor at Immanuel Church. Danny Rico currently holds the position of Youth Director and Worship Leader at Immanuel Church.

Varsity Girls Basketball Head Coach and Jr. High Blue Team Girls Basketball Head Coach
Rejoining our program in 2014, Miguel Rodriguez was born and raised in El Paso where he attended and graduated from Riverside High School. Rodriguez went on to attain a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and a Master’s degree in Education. As a coach, he has overseen Jr. High Volleyball and Jr. Varsity Volleyball, as well as Elementary Track. Most recently he has been the head coach of the Junior. Girl’s Blue Team where he won SWCAA Championships back to back in the seasons of 2017-18 and 2018-19. In the 2019-20 season, he led his team to the SWCAA Championship where they fell short, taking second place. At the Varsity Coaching level, he helped lead our Varsity Girls Basketball team to a TCAF State Championship in the 2006-07 season. Furthermore, he led the Faith Varsity Girls Basketball team to a TCAL State Championship in the 2013-14 season. Most recently, in the 2019-20 season, he led our Varsity Girls Basketball team to a 27-3 (5-1) record and a Third Place finish in the TCAF State Tournament. Miguel Rodriguez is the husband to his wife Celia of 39 years and the father of his three children Jacob, Enrique, and Jessica. In addition to being the PE Coach at Immanuel Christian School, he is an Elder at Park Hills Church.

Varsity Girl’s Volleyball Asst. Coach
Joining our program in 2018, Iris Reyes was raised in the El Paso area where she attended Horizon High School. While at Horizon High School she played Varsity Volleyball all four years of high school as a setter, attaining an MVP award her Sophomore year, and helping lead her team to the State Play-Offs in 2015 and 2016. She graduated from Horizon in the Summer of 2017. After high school she went on to attend El Paso Community College for one year then began attending PIMA Medical Institute, joining their Occupational Therapy Assistant program. As a coach, she has been an assistant coach for our Varsity Girl’s Volleyball team since 2018. She is the oldest sibling of 4 and finds extended family in her Synergy Volleyball family. Iris played volleyball year-round for 7 years, developing her skills in not only high school volleyball but club volleyball as well. She, in her words, “has a deep love for this sport and I plan to spread my knowledge of volleyball to those around me.”

Jr. High Gold Team Boy’s Basketball Head Coach
Joining our program in 2019, Elijah Duran has grown up in El Paso where he attended Ysleta High School. While at Ysleta he played Varsity Basketball. He graduated from Ysleta in the Summer of 2013. Duran then attended Concordia University where he played a year of NCAA Division III Basketball. He is currently enrolled at the University of Texas at El Paso where he is studying Kinesiology to become a basketball trainer and a human fitness performance trainer. As a coach, he took the top job in Jr. High Boy’s Gold Team for the 2019-20 season. He continues to coach the Lady Supers, a local city team that he began coaching in 2017. Duran played semi-pro basketball with the Phoenix Valley Outlaws and worked the UTEP Women’s Basketball Team as a member of the practice squad. He is the oldest sibling of 6 sisters to Jessica Ortega and Richie Duran, who is the Pastor at Iglesia Familia El Paso. Elijah Duran currently holds the position of Youth Pastor at Iglesia Familia El Paso.

Varsity Girls Basketball Asst. Coach and Jr. High Gold Team Girls Basketball Head Coach
Joining our program in 2019, Andre Velasco has grown up in El Paso where he attended Immanuel Christian School. While at ICS he played Varsity Basketball for his entire high school career, from 2014-2018. As a starting point guard, he helped lead his team to the TCAF State Playoffs during the 2015-16 season, where they finished in 3rd place. Velasco helped propel them to another playoff appearance in the 2017-18 season. He graduated from ICS in the Summer of 2018. Velasco went on to attend Texas Tech University to study Civil Engineering, before returning to El Paso in the Summer of 2019 to continue his degree at the University of Texas at El Paso. As a coach, he has assisted in Varsity Girls Basketball, where he helped coach them to a 3rd place finish in the TCAF State Tournament in the 2019-20 season. Velasco is also the head coach of the Jr. High Girls Gold Team.

Joining our program in 2018, Aaron Petersen was born and raised in El Paso where he attended Immanuel Christian School. While at Immanuel he played Jr. Varsity Basketball his Freshman year and became a Coach’s Assistant for the remainder of High School. He graduated from Immanuel in the Summer of 2018. He is currently attending the University of Texas at El Paso and pursuing a Business degree in Management. While a staff member at Immanuel, he was the Basketball Operations Coordinator for the Varsity Boy’s Basketball team, Varsity Boy’s Basketball team 2nd Assistant Coach, and the Jr. Varsity Boy’s Basketball team Assistant Coach in the 2018-19 season. In the 2019-20 season, he took the position of Assistant Athletic Director, while being the Social Media Coordinator for the Athletic Department. Petersen was given the Varsity and Jr. High Discus and Shot Put Coaching position in 2020.
